About the Artist

Mike has had a keen interest in photography since his parents bought him an SLR film camera for his 21st birthday. He recalls one of his earlier images that inspired him to pursue photography as a hobby well before the age of digital imagery. It was taken under an old timber jetty in his hometown of Hartlepool; England and he was drawn to the way the light was filtering through between the old timber beams. He still has the original 35mm slide in his collection today.
Mike trained as a mechanical engineer and worked for British Steel before leaving the UK in 1974 to work in such exotic places as Zambia (copper smelting), Iran (copper mining), and Dubai (aluminium smelting)
Mike settled in Queensland in 2001 where he completed a two-year training course as a professional photographer and he has been working from his Wellington Point studio since then. He was a strong advocate of film photography and traditional darkroom for many years but succumbed to the digital revolution several years ago and now works exclusively with digital SLR cameras.
Mike’s photography covers a wide range of subject areas from portraits, weddings, and landscape photography to commercial areas such as corporate events, building architecture, retail product, and business websites. He also covers a range of creative studio options such as portraits, glamour modelling portfolios, and fine art figure study. His portrait portfolio is diverse, ranging from business and personal headshots through to couples, children, and family groups.
Mike also has a broad portfolio of landscape images that reflect the colour, vibrance and beauty of the River City, the Redlands, and Bay Islands that many of us take for granted. These are available for sale at both the Old Schoolhouse Gallery and Straddievarious Gallery on Raby Bay as photo greeting cards, prints mounted on mat-board and fully framed prints.
All of Mikes images, whether photographed in the studio of on location are based on the premise that, to produce good quality images that demonstrate a clear understanding of the nature and quality of light and the principals of strong, creative composition will have a lasting impact on the observer.
Mike has been a contributing member of the Old Schoolhouse Gallery since 2007 and a contributing supporter of Straddievarious Gallery since 2022. He is also a member of the Redlands Camera Club and is a regular volunteer of S.E Queensland modelling groups that help aspiring models promote themselves online.
