Art Malak Resin
Functional Art
Art Malak, (aka Greg Wills), has always enjoyed working with timber and was a professional woodturner for over ten years in Darwin. He moved to Queensland in 2015 and when looking for a unique way to update a kitchen bench top, he came across a suitable resin that then introduced him to the wonders of working with resin.
After many practice runs on throwaway surfaces, the final result was beautiful. A shiny, scratch and heat-resistant, marble-like bench top in different shades of black, grey and white.
So enamoured with this new material, Art Malak refined his technique experimenting with a myriad of colours on various surfaces to create clocks, platters, coasters, jewellery and large, standalone art pieces.
One of the qualities of Art Malak’s products is the beautiful finish. The process is however quite lengthy, often taking up to six weeks. A minimum of two layers of resin are applied to the surface. The first is the colour coat where the design is created. The second layer, a coat of clear resin, is applied about a week later, allowing the first layer to cure. Maximum hardness is obtained in about 4 weeks, when the clear coat will be glass-like, scratch resistant and food-safe.
Each piece is completed as appropriate: either a cork base, textured backing or attached to a jewellery finding.
Art Malak pieces are unique and made with passion, care and attention to detail. He hopes you enjoy his art work, as much as he enjoyed creating it.
